Excellent machine, very comparable to the new Macbook Air. Recently decided to run Windows 7 as my primary OS, and this machine doesn't disappoint. Purchased through Dell directly for $824 for the Pearl version with SL9600 (2.13Ghz, 6mb cache) processor and 4GB ram, all other specs same as this one. Currently sells for $899 for the Onyx version, suggest you purchase direct. Negatives are few - battery life not as good as the Air, the screen backlighting is obtrusive at times, the speakers and all the ports are on the back (not ideal). Overall though, very responsive and well made ultra light laptop.

Tripp Lite F019-006 IEEE 1394b Firewire 800 Gold Hi-speed Cable, 9pin/4pin - 6ft Review

Tripp Lite F019-006 IEEE 1394b Firewire 800 Gold Hi-speed Cable, 9pin/4pin - 6ft

This cable works great, and is perfect for connecting my HD camcorder to the FireWire 800 port on my new Macbook Pro. I checked Target, Best Buy, and Fry's Electronics, and no one carried this type of cable. You would have to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin cable, and then a 6-pin to 9-pin converter, which ends up costing a LOT more. This cable does that for much less. Highly recommended.

Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboard with Backlighting Review

Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboard with Backlighting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Logitech Illuminated Keyboard (LIK) is the latest premium keyboard offered by the long-time peripheral maker. Logitech touts cutting-edge design with first-class comfort and control. The primary feature of course is provided in the name of the keyboard. Laser-etched illuminated keys set this keyboard apart from the standard keyboards of today.
PROS:
- 3-levels of illumination
- Extremely thin
- Stylish looks
- Reasonably comfortable
- Uncluttered key layout
- Quality construction
- 3 year warranty
CONS:
- Small palm rest
- Some keys not fully lit
- F keys not lit at all
UNBOXING
The first thing I noticed when I received the shipping box was how thin and light the Logitech packaging was to the LIK. Upon opening the outside box and sliding the inner box out, I immediately noticed the deep black cardboard boxing. Nearly all keyboards I have ever unboxed, have either had a white or brown OEM-type box. The black cardboard box reminded me a little of how iPods and other premium accessories are being packaged these days.
INSTALLATION
Installing the LIK was a breeze. I just plugged it into a free USB port directly to my PC. Within a couple of minutes, my PC recognized the new peripheral and the keyboard lit up brightly. I went to the Logitech website and installed the latest SetPoint software (4.60), which incidentally was the version in the included CD-ROM.
LAYOUT
The key layout is pretty much what Logitech has been using for their keyboards of late. The DELETE key is oversized and takes up vertically what normally is the DELETE and INSERT keys. The INSERT key is now located above the DELETE key, in the F1-F12 row, where usually the PRINT SCRN key normally lies. This takes a little getting used to but it's not a big deal, for me anyways. It should be noted that in order to make this keyboard as thin as it is, 9.3mm, Logitech used keys like that of a laptop. If you find typing on laptop keyboards uncomfortable, you may not like this keyboard. The feedback is about as good as the best laptop keyboards I've used, including Dell Inspiron and IBM Thinkpads. They are quiet too, as most laptop keyboards tend to be. All the keys are flat, except the space bar row. The space bar row of keys, including the CTRL, Window key, ALT, and FN keys are rounded at the top. I guess this may make the keys feel larger so that they are easier to press. I found using the CTRL key to be a bit slippery and somewhat easy to miss without looking down. But if I did have to look down, it would be very easy for me to find the keys, even in the dark.
ILLUMINATION
The main selling point of this keyboard for me was the illumination. There are several options for people looking for illuminated keyboards, but most are gaming keyboards with lots of features and macros that the average user does not need. The only actual extra keys on the LIK are above the keypad - Mute, Volume Down/Up, and the backlight control. The F1-F12 row also double as shortcut keys with the use of the FN key located between the ALT and CTRL keys on the right side of the space bar. It is nice to have the minimalistic layout and still have the option to have shortcuts with the press of one additional key. Still, I do miss the one press calculator button. Most of the keyboard is lit white while the F1-F12 row's shortcut icons are lit orange. The F1-F12 characters are not actually lit however. I'm not sure why it would have been difficult to have them lit as well, but since they are laid out in 3 groups of 4, I know which F-keys are which. Many illuminated keyboards have a problem with the keys not actually being lit up very well. Compared to those I've seen, the LIK is very good. Remember that just the characters are lit, not the keys themselves. A very faint light also surrounds each key so you recognize the borders of each key. I did notice however that the ENTER key, left SHIFT key and the CAPS LOCK keys are not lit solid like most of the rest of the keyboard. A dim bulb or improper placement? I'm not sure, but you can still see those keys just fine. The characters etched into the keys are GINORMOUS. They are many times the size of other normal keyboards, which make them even easier to see with the backlighting. The backlight control key allows you to switch between 3 different levels of lighting or to turn the backlighting off altogether.
KEYBLOCKING
I want to mention also that I have not had any issues with the phantom key blocking that a reviewer mentioned and demonstrated by video. Which is not to say that the key blocking does not exist. But from what I understand, nearly all modern keyboards use phantom key blocking as a feature to prevent phantom input. And yes, there is a drawback when certain key combinations are pressed, you must lift one of the depressed keys in order for the next key to register. I type between 70-85WPM on average. Maybe I'm not a fast enough typist but I tried typing the problem combinations as fast as I possibly could and did not once register a problem. I read a few professional reviews online and did not see a mention at all of key blocking being different on this keyboard compared to others. I used keyscan and can verify that the blocking combinations that the other reviewer found do exist but they did not cause any errors for me. I can't see this being an issue for a majority of users personally. I wrote this entire review with it and I intend to keep it.
COMFORT
It is also not an ergonomic keyboard so Amazon should de-list it from that category. The palm rest is nice and soft, but not in the least cushy. I'm used to the soft cushioned, leatherette-type palm rest on the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000. Also, the palm rest on the LIK is not nearly large enough to allow my entire palm to rest on it. My hands are small so I can imagine someone with larger hands finding the palm rest useless.
SUMMARY
The LIK was a very expensive for a non-gaming, corded keyboard. It's now a fantastic bargain. If you're looking for an illuminated keyboard, don't mind the laptop-style keys or even prefer them, and find a simple design without the clutter of extra keys appealing, this might just be the keyboard for you. The palm rest and lack of backlighting on F keys, plus the few keys which were not fully lit, kept me from giving the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard 5 stars. I do consider it a solid 4.5 though and is my new desktop keyboard of choice.
** UPDATE 01/13/2010 **
The keyboard is still going strong with no problems. No stuck or failed keys. The illumination still shines brightly. I often browse new peripherals to see if something better has come along but I have not been tempted in the least to look at other keyboards since I received the LIK. I did find an instance of keyblocking that finally started to annoy me. "Mine" I play Warcraft III (yes, still) on occasion and whenever I type "mine" to a teammate, I just get "min." Other than that, it's still my favorite keyboard.
** UPDATE 11/27/2010 **
I am still loving the LIK. No problems. Also, there have been some fantastic deals on Amazon of late and I've been tempted to pick up a spare. There have been a few other illuminated keyboards released of late to compete with the LIK, including Logitech's own wireless version. I still feel the LIK is the best however. Logitech's Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800 has those funky incurve keys that I personally dislike.

Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Coming from a troubled Nvidia 8600M GT MacBook Pro - let me say that I was very skeptical buying another Apple Laptop with nVidia chip in it.
However, one weekend I decided to visit the nearest Apple Retail Store and check out the newly released models. My decision was mostly influenced by the reduced prices and increased battery life.
After some debating over buying the older model for same price or getting the latest one we settled on the newest mid end $1999 model with 2 GPUs. As is common I got a very nice resale price for my older MacBook Pro as it had AppleCare.
This generation is an all around improvement over the past generation unless you happen to be using ExpressCard on 15" model that is. In our case we never used the ExpressCard after attempting to use a eSATA card that did not work really well. And we have a few SD Cards that we figure we can easily use.
So on to the specific improvements over its predecessor -
1) Battery Life - I was very doubtful that the battery would last any longer than 4 hours at the maximum but was pleasantly surprised to find that for surfing/email type and the occasional CNN/Youtube flash videos getting 6+ hours was quite easy.
2) Prices - No doubt prices are the most reasonable Apple laptops have ever had. If you have no need for the dual GPU you can get the $1699 model which comes with a respectable 2.53Ghz Processor, 4GB RAM and a very capable 9400M GPU.
3) Operating Temperature - I have owned my share of laptops (Apple and non-Apple) and I have to say this one is the coolest - it never gets too warm and I can use it on my lap all the times - even encoding videos using the HandBrake application did not make it uncomfortably hot. However if I switch it to use the 9600M GPU it gets warmer even on regular use. It also runs very quiet - the fans may be coming on but I never notice.
Initially there was a lot of furor over Apple's downgrade of the Serial-ATA interface speed (used to transfer data to and from the hard disk) to 1.5Gbps but Apple quickly restored the speeds to 3Gbps - I do not however notice any difference with the 5400RPM hard disk.
About the display - it is gorgeous and colors are vibrant. I had the opportunity to use a calibrated color profile to make it look even better. However I find the display to be a little too much reflective but I am coming from almost always using matte display so I figure it's a matter of getting used to it.
Apple's use of Mini DisplayPort is ahead of its time - not many displays support it and so I had to buy a $30 DVI adapter - not a big problem but Apple should at the very least re-start bundling the adapter with the Pro machines. Also, another USB port in lieu of the SD Card Reader would be quite welcome - people can use the SD Card Reader for only SD Cards, but a USB port can be used for SD Cards as well as other peripherals.
That said, this generation is overall a very nice improvement - the great battery life itself is enough to convince one to upgrade.
[ Edited to add some findings after extensive use ]
After using it for a few months, I find a handful of things moderately annoying about this laptop -
1) The positioning of USB ports - both USB ports are on one side of the laptop and they are far too closely positioned to use both at once. For example I found I could not attach my Sandisk USB thumb drive and anything else at a time. And I don't have any irregular/unusual devices. They should really go back to having the ports on two sides or at least position them a bit more apart.
2) The Lid of the laptop is loose - this was known to me before but I never thought it would become annoying. I don't routinely use the laptop in bed but whenever I do it's annoying.
3) The amount of RAM Apple advertises (4GB) is not actually entirely usable - only 3.75GB is. So you lose 256Mb of RAM for the dual GPU.

Featuring a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new 15-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) as well as a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) that features Apple's Multi-Touch technology.

This 15-inch MacBook Pro (model MB985LL/A) also now includes Apple's innovative built-in notebook battery for up to 7 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge without adding thickness, weight or cost. Using Adaptive Charging and advanced chemistry first introduced with the 17-inch MacBook Pro the built-in battery delivers up to 1000 recharges before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity--nearly three times the lifespan of conventional batteries.

Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And this MacBook Pro includes two video processors for ultimate flexibility: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for great everyday performance and NVIDIA 9600M GT discrete graphics (256 MB of GDDR3 memory) for fast, smooth video--perfect for 3D gaming.

Other hardware features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and a Secure Digital card slot for easy access to digital photos and audio stored on SD and MMC memory cards.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

The Unibody MacBook Pro Design Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the MacBook Pro all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.

The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing.

The 15-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies

Long-Lasting Battery The 15-inch MacBook Pro now includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 15-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output This 15-inch MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory.

The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB.

Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Environmental Considerations Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro.

Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software for the MacBook, they're designed to work together to produce a smarter product that uses less electricity. For instance, to reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. MacBook Air also decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to efficiently perform a task. The LED-backlit display in the MacBook Pro is another feature that plays an important part in conserving energy, consuming 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays. And the display is designed to dim when you enter a darkened room.

The MacBook Pro meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. MacBook also meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date.

The MacBook Pro has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.

First of all I'm used to purchasing gaming laptops, but I don't favor brand names or anything.. I always look for the best deal out there. After owning an MSI-GT627 for more than a year I wanted to upgrade since hardware has evolved a lot since then (what else is new right). With all the 3d craze all around I got curious about 3d enabled laptops (and I had already heard about nvidia 3d vision) and found good reviews for the ASUS G51JX-3DE. So I went ahead and ordered one and I got hooked to 3d gaming!! The laptop was great (performance), form factor was not so great (more uncomfortable than g53) and it came with a faulty hdmi port so I had to return it. I did more research and found out about the ASUS G53JW-3DE which was to release soon (like a couple of months ago when I was still looking). I decided to wait for it and pre-ordered from amazon because if I purchase a laptop online I rather get it from big stores which tend to be more trustworthy (in case of returns etc). Ok so thats the story, now to the good part:
This laptop just rocks!!!!
It IS a powerhouse... it will run anything at high settings (without 3d enabled) and it won't even stutter when enabling 3d vision (the G51 kinda stuttered (lagged a bit) in some games like LostPlanet2 when I enabled 3d vision). It is well known that there is a performance hit once you enable 3d vision but if there is one laptop that can put up with that is this one.
Another reason why I decided to wait for this laptop when I did is because it is directx 11 compatible (which means it comes with the latest technology out there). Like I said, spec-wise this computer is just top of the line and it delivers.
Now on to the design .. which I think is nothing short than revolutionary!! (no im not an asus rep trying to sell.. lol) I really mean this. I first had seen the G57 (and its good reviews) but I dont know if you can call that a laptop anymore lol (its huge!). So that was one more reason for waiting for the g53! Here is the thing, the vents on the back of the laptop just work.. gone are the days of putting up with heat issues and burning your hands.. NO MORE! Like I said I'm used to purchasing gaming laptops and this is by far the best design I've seen, it is just incredible how they tackled the heating issues and the stealth fighter concept is cool too!!
If you have researched this computer you prob already know about all its other features (lighted keyb, full keyb (w/numeric), webcam, face recognition, 1usb3.0 etc etc) (which are also great) so I focused on performance and design.
It is also worth mentioning that I have already tried playing a bluray 3d movie on this computer and it worked flawlessly (with 3rd party software).
I know you also want to know if there is anything negative about this computer, well there are some aspects that could be improved but didn't affect my rating for it. But for the record:
- Maximum screen resolution is hd only (720p). This is kind of a given at this point for 3d capable screens so there's not much they can do. But I'm sure full hd 3d capable screens will start to show up soon (if they havent). To me this was no biggie cause I've had full hd screens on a 15'' laptop before and I actually lowered the res because everything looked 2 small. I also hook up my computer to my 42'' lcd and I can run everything at FULL-HD if i want to that way too (without 3d until i get a 3d compatible tv).
- No ExpressCard port. Yeah I know this sucks.. i was like what??!!! I have an expresscard tv card (that didn't get a lot of use but still). I was considering taking 1 star just because of this but then you have to remember it does come with a USB 3.0 port.. I guess you can't have everything.
- AC adapter a little bit on the big side. This is not a big deal really but it adds to the weight and it might be worth mentioning.
And that's all I can think of right now.. if anything I will update the review.. so there you have it.. If you're looking for a 3d gaming capable laptop, this one is top of the line (a little bit pricey but well worth the money).. if 3d is not what you're looking for then look for other variations of the G53 which are cheaper.

Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop

This 15-inch MacBook Pro (model MC118LL/A) also now includes Apple's innovative built-in notebook battery for up to 7 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge without adding thickness, weight or cost. Using Adaptive Charging and advanced chemistry first introduced with the 17-inch MacBook Pro the built-in battery delivers up to 1000 recharges before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity--nearly three times the lifespan of conventional batteries.

Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And video is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, which provides an outstanding everyday graphics experience with up to a 5x performance boost.

Other hardware features include a 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 8 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and a Secure Digital card slot for easy access to digital photos and audio stored on SD and MMC memory cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an large 3 MB L2 cache.

Video Processing & Output The MacBook Pro delivers both powerful graphics performance and long battery life via the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, which provides an outstanding everyday graphics experience with up to a 5x performance boost. Power your way through the latest 3D games--including Call of Duty and Quake--and enjoy improved graphics performance with iWork '09, iLife '09, and everything you do in Mac OS X. The power-saving NVIDIA integrated graphics processor also keeps you up and running throughout the day, with up to 7 hours of battery life.

Hard Drive and Memory The 250 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0.

Kensington SlimBlade Presenter Mouse, Wireless Mouse and Presenter in One (Ice Blue) K72283US Review

Kensington SlimBlade Presenter Mouse, Wireless Mouse and Presenter in One (Ice Blue) K72283US
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a basic thin wireless mouse that I could pack into my laptop PC carry bag that wouldn't create a bulky avocado sized lump. The Kensington SlimBlade K72283US (Ice Blue color) fit the bill almost perfectly. I found mine on Amazon for $10 less than the Kensington K72285US which is the identical product except in a deep blue color. The deep blue model would have netted out to the same price but only after dealing with the hassles of a mail-in rebate.
I like the fact that Kensington micro USB transceiver can be stored inside the mouse when it's not in use. I don't like the fact that the micro transceiver isn't the smallest available in the market. When in use, it protrudes out from the laptop USB port by almost an inch.
As a basic mouse, the Kensington tracks well, feels OK in your hand, and gets the job done.
I have a couple minor complaints about the plastic finish and the scroll wheel. The plastic is extremely smooth and it would have been better if there were just a tiny bit of texture for better grip. The same goes for the scroll wheel. It has a fake plastic chrome finish and I find my forefinger slipping over the wheel sometimes instead of turning the wheel. A rubber finish or better texturing would help.
The mouse will also function as a wireless presentation "clicker" allowing you to move forward or backward in your PowerPoint or similar presentation software up to about 25 feet away from your PC.
I was able to get all the features that I wanted to work without having to install the Kensington supplied software. I plugged in the USB micro RF transceiver and the mouse just worked. There's another feature that allows you to tilt the scroll wheel left and right to pan left or right in your presentation or browser and that might require the software but I haven't tried it.
Overall I'm happy with the Kensington SlimBlade mouse when traveling with my laptop PC. For more extended use at home, I prefer my larger Logitech wireless mouse.

Forget about buying a second battery. There are none to be had. This computer also does not appear anywhere on the Sony website, not even under service and parts.
Lovely screen and picture, but it will have limited life as the battery (which is pitiful to being with) dies.
Nice gadget if you have the money to throw away.

APPLE MacBook MacBook Pro GSA-S10N DVD±RW/DL/RAM DVD-RW Super Multi Burner Rewriter Recorder Drive by HL Review

APPLE MacBook MacBook Pro GSA-S10N DVD±RW/DL/RAM DVD-RW Super Multi Burner Rewriter Recorder Drive by HL
Average Reviews:

Please let me state right off: the rating does NOT relate to the actual performance of this drive. Thats because I never got to try it... When I bought this drive, and at the time of this writing, the description states it works with ALL MacBook Pros. It DOES NOT. If you have an older IDE based MBP then you should be fine. If you have a newer SATA MBP (>2008) then do not buy this drive. Whats really sad is that even after I argued with this idiot (seller PowerOptical) over about 10 emails that "All MacBook Pros" should even cover "Unibody" MacBook Pros, the description is (currently) still incorrect. To top it off, instead of seeing his error during this correspondence, he (or she I suppose) kept insisting the unibody was NOT a pro model... even though a direct copy past from [...] said it was, that I "had not done my research" so I would have to pay return shipping AND the restocking fee. Yeah, it was MY fault I took the description for what it said. My bad.

Incase Designs Neoprene Sleeve for MacBook Air - Notebook sleeve - black Review

Incase Designs Neoprene Sleeve for MacBook Air - Notebook sleeve - black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a few weeks of use, here is my impression:
(+) Construction is sturdy and it feels good in my hands.
(+) The MBA fits in very tightly. I have the black color and it actually gives the illusion that it is smaller than its actual size.
(+) The zipper-less design and faux-fur interior provide good cushion with no risk of scratching your precious MBA with the zipper track or friction stain. Of course, only modest protection against occasional bumps is expected, not a 5-foot drop.
(+) The thin design allows extra space for accessories, e.g. power adapter, DVD player, DVI adapter, etc, in your (messenger) bag.
(+) It is relatively inconspicuous for your to carry your MBA around sans attention.
(-) The tight fit and zipper-less design may cause people with large hands trouble inserting the MBA and pulling the top closure part over / off the MBA, especially with the sharp edge.
Recs: If you are fanatic about protecting your MBA, I would recommend the Full Body Protection Film (either InvisibleShield or Elago). I personally use the InvisibleShield and it works quite well.

Just arrived. Put in on. Doubled the weight of the MacBook Air. Does not protect the corners (which are the first to bump). And I might be naive, but shouldn't leather smell like leather and feel like leather? It might be leather. But it doesn't look, smell or feel like it. I feel truly misled. Live oversees so I won't send it back. But I will not be using it. Truly a waste of money.

iLuv 9.7 Inch Neoprene Sleeve for iPad and iPad 2 - Grey Review

iLuv 9.7 Inch Neoprene Sleeve for iPad and iPad 2 - Grey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, so I'll say this up front. This sleeve is perfectly functional, and for under $15, it's not a bad, but if you're looking for something high-quality, this isn't it.
The case is only padded on one side (presumably the side you'd put the screen towards.) so this case is not in any way designed to protect your iPad from being dropped. The foam is thicker than what you typically see in neoprene sleeves, but it's not a fabric-based foam, but a plastic based foam, more like you would see in shipping boxes.... Which means that it's designed for short term abuse, not long-term wear and tear. If you're not particularly hard on your cases, it's probably good enough. The foam is also not sewn into the case, but is held in place by s strip of material at the mouth of the case, so if the foam starts to break down, you really cant continue using the sleeve without buying new foam.
The unpadded side of the case appears to have some stiff cloth or paper inside the lining, so there is a slight crumpling sound when the side is bent or moved. It's not in and of itself a big deal, but I cant figure out what the purpose for it is.
The case itself appears to be sewn well, with the exception of the pockets on the unpadded side. The mouths of the pockets are cut straight into the neoprene, with no trim or hemming done to them. Neoprene typically doesn't fray much, but I will point out that fresh out of the box, there were already a few stray threads around the two pockets. I imagine that extensive use of these pockets might cause more problems with the untrimmed pocket openings. All that said, the iPad does fit snugly into the sleeve, and the zipper's teeth are plastic, which reduces the chance of your iPad getting scratched when putting it in or taking it out of the case. If you're looking for an inexpensive case to keep your iPad from getting scratched when you're toting it around, this case will probably work. If your looking for more protection from drops or other impact, you probably want to look at a higher end case.

Intel 320 Series 80 GB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid-State Drive Retail Box Review

Intel 320 Series 80 GB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid-State Drive Retail Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first SSD, and I absolutely love it. Very fast boot up and shut-down;
incredibly fast program launch - even monsters like Photoshop: blam - they're on.
Since my system worked reasonably well before, I worried about every aspect
of this project. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why spend the $250, what if I have boot problems,
what if the performance increase is marginal or worse?). Incredibly the installation
was totally quick and flawless. Bravo, Intel! Now for some details.
I bought the retail kit ($10 to $25 more than the OEM version). The two cables
are handy (sata power and data), I used the bracket, and even the
tiny 3 inch CD with installation instructions was useful. Amazingly,
those instructions are not on Intel's website.) They worked flawlessly.
I installed it in my 2008 Intel desktop tower that runs Windows XP Pro
32-bit and that has an Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 processor. This system was top
of the line when I bought it, so I really wanted to wait another year before
upgrading to a 64-bit OS (to get > 4gb of DRAM) and a faster processor
(like Ivy Bridge). I love WinXP, and I have a lot of old drivers, so I was hesitant
to upgrade to Win7 now or to make any expensive hardware upgrades now.)
I think I made the perfect choice, but this decision was not without anxiety.
After reading all the reviews for Intel's SSD X25-M (it's Gen 2,
34 nano SSDs), it was apparent that most buyers raved about them:
their speed and their reliability, but, cruising the internet you
find all kinds of potential worries. I list them here, only to dismiss them.
(BTW, the Series 320 SSDs are from Intel's 25 nano fab in Utah: they are
even faster and more reliable than the X25-M series. Although they only
support 3gb/sec data transfer, that's all my old mobo can dish out, so that's fine.)
1) SSDs, WinXP, and TRIM. This was a worry, since WinXP was written a decade ago,
long before SSDs. My worry was that WinXP does not support TRIM, which is
a command to tell the SSD to overwrite deleted data. Without TRIM, the efficiency
of the SSD might deteriorate due to unavailable pages. The solution for WinXP is
to use a small, free program, the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox, to perform this
drive optimization. (Win7 does it automatically.) So, a non-worry -
not a reason to upgrade to Win7. BTW, SSDs and TRIM are explained in a
well-written 2009 article on AnandTech "The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs."
2) SSDs and BIOS or other drive recognition problems. This was a huge worry,
since this has been a recurring catastrophe about every five years: having a
hard drive that simply does not show up either in Windows, or even worse, not in
the BIOS. I spoke to some professionals; they had never experienced this when
installing Intel SSDs on customers desktops. In fact, I did not have to touch the
BIOS at all. I just connected the sata power and data cables, and the drive
magically appeared on the BIOS list and in Windows (on the Device Manager drive list).
(The 'raptor HD is disconnected for now.)
3) Installing Windows (or anything) on the SSD. I need to mention that although,
I could SEE the SSD in the Device Manager, it does NOT show up on "My Computer"
along with the C drive. The reason is that it ships, of course, unformatted.
(I had hoped to just copy my entire mechanical hard drive (a WD 600 gb Velociraptor)
to the SSD using Norton Ghost.) Instead, I resorted to reading the directions that came with
the drive on that tiny little CD. Again, Intel to the rescue with their Drive Migration software
provided by Acronis. Don't be scared off by the minutiae of that program. In fact, you only
use one single command: Clone Now - the rest is automatic.
The bottom line is that this was a hugely worthwhile and easy project with a
thrilling result: incredibly fast performance. I think mechanical drives will go the way
of magnetic tape: for archival storage only and to museums. (I also write about
the future of biotech, neuroscience, and AI: see BobBlum.com )
PS: Don't stress about mounting the SSD. (See the YouTube "Samsung SSD Awesomeness"
with the guy trampolining with 24 SSDs.)

Gateway NV55C28u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black) Review

Gateway NV55C28u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black)
Average Reviews:

My first computer was a Gateway and I keep coming back. I love the full key board on this computer and the touch pad works like an iPhone which I really like. I wasn't sure that I would like the color, but the texturing adds dimension to the color and I'm liking it more than I thought I would. Its pretty fast and picture quality when Skyping is good.
Some people don't think the speakers are lound enough, but they are fine for what I want to do. I also love the sleeker design and the larger screen makes it easy to watch movies. I use an HP at work and since getting this computer -- I hate the work computer. I would recommend this to anyone!

Toshiba Satellite L505-GS5037 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite L505-GS5037 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not too long ago, I needed to buy a new laptop computer since my old Dell computer nearly died. (There was some sort of hard drive problem that would only allow me to start up in 'safe mode.') After scouring Amazon for several days, I decided upon this Toshiba Satellite computer. It seemed like the best value for the money I was willing to spend.
Pros:
Big screen -- This is great for watching movies in true 16:9 ratio. The screen is also really bright so you won't miss any details.
It has a number pad -- I really like being able to use 10-key typing to enter numbers in documents and web sites. Having a number pad is surprisingly necessary.
Fast start-up / Fast wake-up -- This computer has enough resources to start up quickly from an off state. The start-up feels like it could be a little bit faster, but, again, it is still significantly faster than my old Dell. I usually don't put my computers in hibernation mode when I walk away for any extended period of time, so I can't critique that feature of this computer.
Stylish -- This computer looks sleek and sophisticated. It is a real joy to look at.
Generous system resources -- This computer has 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard disk capacity. It also has those new Intel processors that feature "hyper-threading" technology. Since Windows 7 is a system hog, a new laptop should at least have 6GB of RAM, but 4GB seems to be just fine for this machine. I can switch quickly between programs, start programs quickly, and end them quickly, too. A 500GB hard disk is just an astoundingly huge amount of storage space. There is more than enough space for photos and movies.
The mouse-pad -- I don't know how Toshiba did it, but the mouse-pad is the coolest feature of the laptop. The mouse-pad looks like it was spray-painted on top of the plastic shell. It also works really well AND it offers multi-touch functionality. If you need to increase the size of the font on a web page, all you do is spread two fingers on the mouse-pad. It is actually pretty damn cool.
Cons:
Atrocious speakers -- OK, the worst feature in this computer are the absolutely horrible speakers. The sound that comes from them is tinny and without depth. I find it interesting, to say the least, that Toshiba would have a mid-range computer with decent hardware specs but include insufficient speakers. Whoduthunk?
Not enough ports / Bad port locations -- Again, for the amount of hardware specs this computer has, Toshiba only included 2 USB ports. The laptop shell is spacious enough to include 4 USB ports without any problems. My old Dell laptop had 4 USB ports. Also, the USB ports and power DC-in locations are really inconvenient: They are located on the right side of the machine. Most people are right-handed BUT protruding cords interferes with desk space which, in turn, limits the space that most people might have because of the locations of the ports. The USB ports and DC-in power port should be re-located to the back of the machine.
Other details:
The computer is finished with a matte black plastic shell. Just so you know, matte (any color) shows off every single speck of dust and finger print! After I type this review I'm going to wipe down the whole machine with a clean cotton cloth. Also, the keys are matte black, too, so they really show off finger prints! Don't laptop manufacturers know that laptops are dirty machines?! This laptop also weighs 6lbs. For me, it isn't heavy, but for others it might be too heavy.
Final thoughts:
Overall, I really like this laptop. It has plenty of resources for a multitude of applications. I can play some graphically intense games without too many problems. It has plenty of processing speed, RAM, and hard disk space for just about anything you can throw at it. This is a great all-around mid-range laptop. The only reason I didn't give this laptop a 5-star rating is because there simply are not enough USB ports, and the locations of the ports should be on the back of the machine instead of the right side. The speakers are also sub-par for what could have been included.
