Speck Products MB13PU-SEE-CL See-Thru Case for 13-Inch MacBooks with Polycarbonate Unibody, Clear - DOES NOT FIT MACBOOK PRO

I just spent $1000 on a laptop. A laptop with a body that scratches easily. Sure, scratches don't affect the laptop's ability to be a functional laptop. But if I wanted just a functional laptop, I'd buy some cheap HP/Toshiba/Whatever from Walmart. I bought a MacBook because it's freaking awesome, and I certainly want it to remain that way as long as possible. The Speck case should aid greatly in that regard.
It fits the MacBook like glove, and makes for traveling with it a lot less worrisome. It's not going to get dinged up around the house, or anywhere else I take it. And even with the case on, it has no overheating issues, nor does it preclude use of a carry sleeve. I'm using the inCase neoprene sleeve with it, for anyone interested.
The only pain in the butt is trying to keep various lint particles out from in between the case and the laptop. I try to remember to wipe the case down, and clean out all the lint once a week or so. With that very minor maintenance, our two-month old MacBook looks pristine as the day we unboxed it. Even with the case, the general aesthetic of the MacBook isn't covered up.

Twelve South BookBook, 13-Inch Distressed Black, Hardback Leather Case for 13-Inch MacBook/MacBook Pro Review

Twelve South BookBook, 13-Inch Distressed Black, Hardback Leather Case for 13-Inch MacBook/MacBook Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an amazingly good product. Nice, thick, real leather that feels sturdy and durable. It is distressed, so it looks like an antiquarian book, which is neat. I can't imagine a more nifty case for your mac.
Two notes for potential buyers. First, while the bookbook is made to look like a book, it is more like a big old encyclopedia than a conventionally sized book. I love the look of the thing, but it will take a tall shelf to store it like a book. It does have a "stealth" aspect to it because it looks like a book rather than a computer case, but it looks so good that book thieves might take it!
Second, some people might live to regret that it doesn't have a handle. That isn't an issue for me and it would defeat the whole idea of the bookbook, but if you walk long distances with your computer, be sure that you are up for carrying it like a book rather than in a conventional briefcase or backpack.
I bought the 15" model. While it is made specifically for the MacBook Pro, I have an older Powerbook G4. I wrote the company and asked if my computer would fit, and they replied (essentially) "kind of." But they added that because of their 30-day no questions asked guarantee, it wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't happy with the fit. So I took a small chance, and as it turns out it fits perfectly. No bulges or fit issues of any kind. It really is beautiful.
I like it so much that I am buying one for my ipad (although you also might want to consider a dodocase for your ipad).

From the Manufacturer
A Novel Way to Cover Your MacBook
BookBook is a one-of-a-kind, hardback leather case designed exclusively for MacBook Pro. Available in Classic Black or Vibrant Red, BookBook brings three levels of security to your prized Mac. First, the hardback cover and spine provide solid protection from the rigors of the road. Second, the vintage book design disguises MacBook for superior security. And third, the stylish case protects you from being like everyone else because BookBook is totally original, just like you.

Hardback Cover Softens the Blows.
Protecting your MacBook is a top priority and it's job one for BookBook. Slip your Mac inside the velvety soft, padded interior. Zip it closed and your baby is nestled between two tough, rigid leather hardback covers for a solid level of impact absorbing protection. The rigid spine serves as crush protection for an additional line of defense. BookBook creates a hardback book structure that safeguards your MacBook like few other cases can. Far better than any floppy neoprene bag ever will. End of story.

The Real Story. No Two Are Alike.
Each BookBook is brought to life with hand craftsmanship and distressing, ensuring no two are exactly alike. From dual zippers with leather pulls, that at first glance look like bookmarks, to the sturdy reinforced hardback covers, BookBook is a vintage work of art built to protect modern day Macs. The classic case was designed to be used two ways. Use it as a traditional sleeve or use the elastic corner clips to hold your MacBook in place while you work with it in BookBook. Dual zippers allow you to charge your MacBook while it safely stays inside BookBook. This case is designed with good looks and smart functionality, cover to cover.

BookBook is the Perfect Disguise.
One of the neatest features of BookBook is the stealthy security it delivers. No one will see your MacBook when it's tucked inside BookBook, even when it's right under their nose. Sitting on a coffee table, dorm room or desk, BookBook looks like a vintage piece of literature, not an expensive laptop. It's a great disguise and a simple way to reduce the risk of your MacBook getting stolen.

HP Mini 210-1095NR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Red) Review

HP Mini 210-1095NR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trying to buy a netbook after their explosion in popularity is proving to be difficult, as manufacturers pump out far too many variations.
In addition to the listed specifications for each model of the HP Mini 210 (cpu, memory, disk, exterior color/finish), there are other physical variations depending on model number.
Depending on which HP Mini 210 model you get, some differences are:
- A different keyboard ("island" keyboard or traditional keyboard)
- A matte or glossy screen
- A different physical size of battery
- Different wireless support (802.11b/g vs 802.11b/g/n vs 802.11b/g+bluetooth)
At the time of writing, existing reviews and photos make it difficult to tell what you'll end up with. According to the HP website, there are a dizzying one hundred ninety different HP Mini 210 models.
Some of the popular models that I saw had these attributes:
210-1010NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1030NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1040NR: Glossy screen, island keyboard
I ended up with a 210-1040NR. I prefer the island keyboard, it seemed to have less flex than the traditional keyboard. Touch typing on either keyboard was not an issue, punctuation is in the correct place, and both the shift keys and the spacebar are nice and large. The multitouch touchpad works better than the competition. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 and everything works out of the box. (Although the internal fan appears to be on regardless of temperature)
For me, knowing the limitations of the cpu, keyboard, and build quality, the 1024x600 resolution of the display is the weak point. I see there's also a HP Mini 210 HD lineup with a higher resolution display, which may be worth considering.
As far as 10.1" netbooks on the market as of February 2010, after handling and typing on competing models from Acer, Asus, Toshiba, and Sony, for me the HP Mini 210 is the winner.

Verbatim Acclaim 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97165 (Piano Black) Review

Verbatim Acclaim 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97165 (Piano Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164 yesterday and I have already copied over all of my important photographs, documents and other important electronic files which I want to keep at hand.
Moving files over to this Hard Drive is rather fast even without the optional Turbo USB software it comes with. I timed that it took about 5 minutes (8:48pm - 8:53pm) to move a folder containing 3.19 GB of data over from my desktop to this Hard Drive.
Moving the same folder of files (3.19 GB of data) from the Hard Drive back to my desktop was quicker and took about 4 minutes (9:03pm - 9:07pm). This is rather nice because I often find the transfer rate of files from desktop to external storage to be much faster than the other way around. If you are someone who needs to carry around 320 GB of data with you this is a great little device. It's rather small, and measures to be about 4.5" x 3" and 1/2" thick , it creates hardly any noise (if any), and doesn't require an external power supply. It does install a driver automatically in a few seconds but no software was needed to be installed manually.
A few concerns I have about its durability and lack of security. Regarding the durability of the case I hopefully I can find a nice cover to keep it in otherwise I worry that something may happen to its case if just tossed into a purse.
However I'm not sure about the hard drive's security. I currently have a ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive and it comes with software which provides an option for the user to password protect it. If I were to lose the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive anyone who happened to find it would have to completely re-format it, and thus doing so they end up erasing all data from the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive before they are able to access it. I may have lost the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive but no one would be able to access any confidential files I have on it. It is not the case with the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164.
Last I have a minor complaint about the hard drive and it's that the outer shell (Piano Black) shows finger prints extremely well.
If I was to make any suggestions it would be to provide the option to password protect the harddrive and to offer the Verbatim Acclaim in a black matte finish as the Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 CL N Portable External Hard Drive 97061 (Black Matte Finish) is.
Suggestions I have for anyone purchasing this product would probably be to also purchase a carrying case to protect it.
A quick breakdown would be:
Pros
1. Besides a small driver there isn't any software to install
2. Extremely quiet
3.Lot's of storage in a rather small unit
Cons:
1. Case shows any fingerprint
2. Hard plastic case may not be very sturdy. Maybe best to buy a case to protect it if you plan on using it for travel
3. Does not come with security software to protect it in the event if you were to lose it and someone was to find it.

Toshiba Satellite C655-S5118 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite C655-S5118 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this as a lightening deal for $399 (plus tax... bummer). I'll admit, taking it out of the box I was a little disappointed. The casing is a textured dull black and feels like a cheap plastic to the touch. But, once I turned it on, I decided to keep it as the screen is incredibly clear and bright (which was a pleasant surprise as I was trying to hold out for a laptop with LED- this has LCD), setup was easy, pro-loaded software was great and overall everything runs very smooth. In researching the processor prior to buying it, this Intel is very highly rated to be in a computer at this price point and better than the processor in any other budget laptop I've been able to find. It comes preloaded with the Toshiba book reader program (essentially Kindle for your computer), Norton 30 day trial and basic Microsoft office. The 10 key on the keyboard is also very nice to have.
Runs very quietly as well, I can barely hear the fan even when it's on. It does turn on and off somewhat frequently, but it's so quiet I don't notice anymore. Haven't had any problems with heat either- the bottom of the laptop feels only mildly warm even after being on for a few hours. To summarize:
Cons:
Cheap feeling casing
Only 2 USB ports
No webcam
Speakers don't turn up very load
No LED screen (although as I mentioned above- the LCD looks great so it doesn't bother me)
No HDMI port
Pros:
Office pre-installed
Quiet fan
Fast processor for this price point
All programs run very smooth
10 key on keyboard
Built in wireless
PRICE
All-in-all, this laptop is ready to go out of the box and, so far, has been incredible for the price.

After doing a bit of research how to upgrade RAM to 4GBs in new Macbook Pro (2009 edition, MB990LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop with 2GBs RAM) and failing to order from Crucial directly I went with this option. The upgrade was painless - with the right screwdriver for those little screws on the back of the laptop it took me 10 minutes to replace the default RAM (and I spent most of that time by looking at the other internal parts to see how the laptop is built). It works flawlessly so far (couple of days). I tested the RAM by loading memory hungry applications to fill the 4 GBs to see both modules work fine.

Extended Capacity 5600 mAh Laptop Battery For Apple Macbook 13" Series Review

Extended Capacity 5600 mAh Laptop Battery For Apple Macbook 13 Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My roommate had a older-model macbook with a battery that could maybe last 5 minutes without the charger. Since he never really needed it off the charger and the cost of the official battery is outrageous, I figured I'd surprise him with a gift to help a fellow mac user.
This battery installed decently enough. The color and the fit were not quite right, but it's hardly noticeable; unless you like starring at the bottom of your computer that is.
My biggest complaint was that his battery wasn't recognized as present in the OS. Sure, it works, but without knowing how much power there is left in the thing, it's kinda worthless. The only indication we get is the power button on the battery itself, which requires turning the thing over and pressing it. This maybe due to the fact that he's running Tiger, but I don't know.
Anyway, it was a risk worth the money, but it didn't really change anything, so if I could do it again, I'd pass.

I have ordered a lot of memory and this is the first time with this company and the first time I've ever had a memory problem. Coincidence?

Creative Labs SB0950 ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook Audio System Review

Creative Labs SB0950 ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook Audio System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unfortunately, the mixed reviews on this product--mixed here on Amazon and elsewhere--delayed my purchase of this product and almost stopped me from purchasing it altogether. Fortunately, in my experience the less than stellar reviews were incorrect. This product has, quite simply, solved all of my audio issues.
My issues were poor volume output and popping/crackling. Sadly, dropping over $1K on a new higher end laptop was not sufficient to avoid having to deal with these annoying audio issues. Both issues were solved immediately with this product. No more popping/crackling and now the volume gets as loud as I want it with plenty of room left to spare. In addition, the quality of the audio is crisper/clearer and more room-filling.
I had also planned on setting up a wireless link to my stereo with the use of an Apple Airport Express module but I just found out that this item works wirelessly with a Creative receiver which costs about $20 less so I will be making that purchase soon as well.
Bottom line I couldn't be happier with this product and I couldn't be more disappointed with my laptop manufacturer for making me purchase it.
p.s. this does work with Windows 7 but I had to download the latest software for free from the Creative site.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX-EU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) Review

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX-EU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned this netbook for a week now, and wanted to share my thoughts. I will try to update this review after a few months as well (6 month update at the end).
Pros:
1. Beautiful design and light weight. This is part of the ASUS seashell design family, with beautiful curves and design details. The netbook surfaces are textured to minimize fingerprint smudges. For that reason, I think white looks much better than black since the texturing shows more on the black and makes it look more grey or brown than an elegant black. The white looks very elegant. The netbook weighs very little (about the weight of a textbook).
2. Performance and features. It's a lot faster than I was expecting, and multitasks quite well (granted, the worst I have been subjecting it to has been installing many programs, streaming videos, and some video processing). There are times when you can notice a definite slower response than a laptop but those instances have been few so far. Also a note on memory - I think the 1GB memory is more than enough for me. I have not had a sluggish performance problem, and my free memory has always been >200MB while running multiple applications. This is a plus as I won't have to upgrade to 2GB memory right away as most netbook users do.
Overall on performance, I would say it is 80% of a laptop (and not 50% or lower as one might expect). I can see myself not needing my laptop for anything other than MATLAB or intensive programs from now on.
3. Features. I like the beautiful bright LED screen and multitouch touchpad (scroll with two fingers etc).
4. Small power adapter. The power adapter is half the size of laptop power adapters, which is excellent for travel.
5. Little bloatware. Few (4-5) pre-installed programs. Dell is notorious in this category.
Cons:
1. Battery life. It's a 3-cell battery, and rated only to 4 hours max. I have been getting around 3 hours using it normally with screen brightness at 50% (with this screen, 50% is plenty - 100% is too bright). I will definitely have to take my power adapter with me wherever I go. This might be a serious problem for some of you. Consider some of the other ASUS models (8-11 hours battery life) if it is.
2. Temperature. Minor issue, but it gets a little warm while running. You won't need a cooling pad or anything but you'll notice. Actually, you might not even notice depending on what you're used to. I am used to a Thinkpad laptop which has one of the best cooling.
3. Windows starter. It lacks in features compared to higher versions, such as the ability to change your desktop image. Not an issue for me but might be for some of you.
4. Touchpad and keyboard. Again, being used to a Thinkpad's amazing touchpad and keyboard, this one takes a little getting used to. The touchpad buttons are hard to press. The keyboard is a little cramped. It shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to get used to though.
5. Only 2 USB ports. It does come with a SD/MMC card reader though.
PS: I got this during the thanksgiving sales for 230 dollars. I would say anything around 250 is a good deal for this netbook. But I would not pay 300 or above for it.
*** Update: May 2011 ***
I have owned this netbook for six months now and it is going strong. Still boots and runs fast and smoothly. The trackpad has been annoying at times (the multitouch is nowhere as good as a mac and it often misinterprets scrolling to be resizing etc). Other than that and the poor battery life, this is a good netbook. But see if you can get one of the newer ASUS netbooks (with 11 hrs battery life and dual core processors) on sale - they might come down to $320 or so which is not much more than what this is selling for. But overall I am happy with my purchase and the price that I paid (200 + tax etc = 230).

Sony VAIO VPC-F133FX/B 16.4-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Sony VAIO VPC-F133FX/B 16.4-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Sony Vaio is truly a great P.C. It runs cool with well designed fan ports, it falls in the high end of laptops and offers a great value for the price and features. Here's a list of pros and cons:
PROS:
- Attractive, intelligent design
- Comfortable, well designed backlit keyboard
- Bright, clear monitor (@720p)
- Integrated Blu-Ray player
- High-end Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GPU
- Quick; excellent for gaming
- 3 USB ports, two of which are USB 3.0
- Conveniently placed power chord insert and power button
- Solid computer and sturdy monitor
- Good speakers for a laptop
- Webcam has decent image
CONS:
- The USB 3.0 ports are on the front right and can get in the way if you use a laptop pad with integrated mousepad (not a problem for most users)
- The third USB port is combined with the eSATA port, so you lose out on a USB if you use eSATA
- No "always on" feature for backlighting the keyboard
- Comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows 7 Ultimate should be standard at this price point.
I had trouble finding cons with this laptop. If you're looking for a quality gaming or entertainment PC, look no further.

Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 - Ocean Teal Blue Review

Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 - Ocean Teal Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, i've tried over half a dozen wireless mice in the last five years. Every new one seems to claim that they're all lag free. That's not the case with me. I've even tried wireless mice up to a hundred dollars in price and even some Bluetooth mice. They are usually fine on a small laptop screen, but when you connect them up to a 24" LCD there is barely noticeable lag. It's so small that 95% of people would probably not notice it at all. It only seems to occur on large screens and it's a big enough annoyance to keep me from using a wireless mouse of any kind.
I heard about the new Blue-Track technology and just figured it was just a marketing thing and not really something new. I figured it was perhaps just an Optical mouse in disguise. After losing my receiver for my VX Revolution (which is a very good mouse) I needed a new mouse for my laptop with a small receiver. I read up about these and a almost went for the Mobile Mouse 5000 instead, but glad I didn't. I saw these on display at a local store and they were out of stock. I checked online and most every place was out of stock of them. I waited a week and my local store only got in the white version. After another few weeks I ended up driving a half hour just to pick up this mouse in black. Yes, I actually waited just so I didn't have to buy the ugly white version!
Instead of connecting it to my laptop I immediately hooked it up to my PC connected to a 24" display. I immediately noticed there was no micro-lag AT ALL. I was pretty impressed to say the least. It actually tracks just as well as my Logitech G5 that I was previously using. So far I have not installed any of the software on the disc, so I can not comment on that. I usually prefer not to if I can avoid it.
In my picture viewing software the mouse scroll wheel skips by pictures too fast, so that it's nearly impossible to scroll down one image at a time. I can fix the scroll speed in the software easily i'm sure. The scroll wheel itself is a bit too thin, but this is a laptop mouse, so it's not a big deal. The wheel just feels cheap and i've always preferred the Logitech wheels due to the clicking sound it makes when you scroll it. The auto-scroll on the VX revolution is a really nice feature.
Unfortunately the entire mouse feels cheap. It IS cheap, so that's not a big deal. It's not bad enough to make me want to not use it though. There is a rubber grip material on both sides of the mouse and i'm not sure why this was needed, since it's too smooth to begin with. It does however make the mouse look a bit better. It is a very well designed mouse and looks pretty nice.
I'm currently using this still on my desktop computer. As my main mouse it's a bit small, but for a laptop it's PERFECT. I actually liked the blue-track so much that I went out and bought the Wireless Mouse 5000 for my desktop. I didn't like that much (too big and heavy!) so I'm going to keep this for desktop use despite it being so small.
My suggestion to Microsoft is that they should make a higher quality version of this. One with a metal scroll wheel and better buttons. Pretty much like a top of the line model like the MX revolution. This actually tracks better then that mouse, so why not? It's the best tracking wireless mouse i've ever tried and the best mouse you can get for the price!
UPDATE: 3/2/2010
I love this mouse so much that I did end up buying two of them. One for my main computer and the second for my laptop. The nice thing about it when using it on a laptop is the receiver is so small you don't notice it. I tested the tracking on carpet, wood flooring and even glass and it was no problem. The most difficult surface for it to track on is tan leather. I often sit in my leather recliner while using my laptop and put the mouse on the arm rest (it's pretty wide). Sounds dumb, but it works! It's not even all that flat, but slightly curved! Occasionally after every 10 minutes the mouse starts to throw a fit and I have to switch to a different surface. Once I use it on a different surface for a few minutes and switch back, it's fine. It's almost as if the mouse re-learns how to track on the new surface. Very strange. I'm just amazed that it'd even work on such a surface to begin with.
The only minor negative i've found is that the battery doesn't last long. It's not even worth mentioning since batteries are so cheap. I've been through about two in a month. I've also noticed some stores charging more for some colors due to being hard to find!

I bought this charger because like many other users I've seen, my original charger went out. At first it worked great, but now the shoddy craftsmanship of this product is starting to show its ugly head. The prong at the end of the charger which inserts into the computer has broken, and the only way to charge the computer is to push the broken cord deep into the base of the prong, making the charger effectively worthless.
Don't buy this things. It's a piece of junk.

Acer Aspire One AOD255-2509 10.1-Inch Netbook (Diamond Black) Review

I just got this netbook yesterday and it was supposed to be a Christmas present from my boyfriend, but I just couldn't wait to open it. I haven't put it down since!
It's small and compact, and is pretty quick. In the item description, it states that the hard drive is 160 GB. When I got the computer, I read the box and it states that the actual formatted capacity is less and may vary depending on preloaded materials and operating environment. When I actually looked at my computer's hard drive, it was 133 GB. I just wanted to share that because I know that some people will use this for pictures, video and music. I am using it almostly exclusively for surfing the internet, emails, and Microsoft Word.
The keyboard is 93% of a normal sized keyboard. Yesterday it was pretty difficult to type because I wasn't used to it, but today I'm doing a lot better! The only problem with my typing is that I keep forgetting that you can't put your wrists down on the touchpad because that moves the cursor and I end up typing where I don't want to type. I did purchase a wireless mouse, which works great, but unfortunately you cannot disable the touchpad built into the notebook.
The battery life is approximately 4 hours, give or take. I would like to have a 6 cell lithium ion battery instead of the 3 cell, but I don't know if they have 6 cell available for this particular netbook.
The one downside is that you have the choice of small print or medium print. If you choose to use the small print, it is so small that your eyes need to rest after about an hour. Besides that, when on the internet, you cannot read a lot of the words because the letters actually blend into one another. So, I use medium print. However, it makes it much more difficult to navigate the internet because not only do I have to scroll down, but I also have to scroll over to see the entire page.
It's thin, compact and portable. It works great for what I need it for! My daughter has an iPod touch 8GB new generation, and now she wishes that she had one of these netbooks instead!

Gateway ID49C11u 14 Inch Laptop - Arctic Silver Review

Gateway ID49C11u 14 Inch Laptop - Arctic Silver

I recently purchased this Gateway and so far I love it! I have had zero problems with the touch pad. It's actually neat; it's backlit so it glows (you can turn off this feature if you don't like it). You can tap anywhere on the touchpad instead of having to use the left click button. To do a "right click" (as some other reviewers said they couldn't figure out), you still have to push down on the lower right corner of the touch pad. If you are on a webpage and you want to scroll down, you can just press and hold over the right side of the keypad, and a little emblem pops up and you can swipe up or down to scroll. I was really nervous about the touchpad after reading other reviews, I'm happy to report it exceeded my expectations.
As far as the rest of the computer, it has a really nice flat top, very ergonomic and simple. It's pretty light, around four or five pounds. It has a nice speaker which lines the entire front of the laptop base; for a "Dolby Virtual Surround Sound" experience. It's not quite a Bose, but it is better than any of my previous computers.
The keypad is large and easy to type on. The screeen is widescreen, with good graphics. I primarily use my laptop for personal use, mostly surfing the web (including writing product reviews on amazon), I also like to watch netflix and Hulu.
For these purposes, the i3 processor seems to be terrific. Much better than my old dual core intel. I don't have an i5 or and i7 to compare it to, but I think the higher end ones are maybe better for things like "gaming".
Best of luck!
