Acer AS7745-7949 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)What a treat, when I first received this I was a bit skeptical in how well the laptop would run. However, I was in for a surprise when I set everything up and gave it a try. That means deleting useless programs that come with the computer and putting in ones from the previous desktop. (the desktop would never have a chance with this thing)
The monitor is just enormous, which if you like big laptops you'll love this. Mind you though that moving this thing is sluggish, but manageable enough to forgive. Because hey now, you're getting a huge laptop! The screen is very clear
The processor is fast, I was able to run any program I used without stuttering or failing compared to previous computers.
The RAM is high, don't be expecting to wait anytime soon with this thing. 4GBs is a lot of RAM.
I'm not familiar with how 64-bit operating systems work, so I can't comment on that.
The hard drive space is 500GB, way more than I ever had combined. I can't say I won't use a lot though, hehehe.
Although, even with all these perks I have one part I'm not as content with.
The graphics. What you're getting here isn't some specific graphic card, but some thing called Intel HD Graphics. I mean, they're okay and all, but they weren't as satisfactory as I was expecting. Some games I ran I could set to some pretty high settings, but the rest I had to live with lower. Which is me probably being picky because it was a Christmas present, hehe.
The second problem I had is the top part of the laptop (behind the monitor) smudges really easy from the oil in your fingers. I hate smudges, but again, it's a very minor complaint.
Anyway, all in all this is a very nice laptop for the price. A little on the pricey side for me, but I'll live.
Been using this laptop for 13 days now, not a problem with anything but any foolish mistakes I do.

In addition to the sleek look-and-feel, feather-light design, on-off illuminated button (so you can keep it plugged in but not active or use as mute button while recording - see Customer Images), its best feature is the 8-foot long cord which allows amazing flexibility and range despite being anchored via the USB port to your computer. For me, that one simple design component speaks "volumes" about the overall design quality of this product.
This microphone is recommended for voice - not music - recording. But I found the music playback perfectly acceptable, especially as a background track.
The installation is as easy as plugging it into your USB port. Software is freely available via download.com and then by searching for EXPStudio Audio Editor Free 3.93, which features multiple track capabilities (background music with voice-over). Using your computer, the software and this microphone, you definitely can create your own in-house recording studio.

(More customer reviews)My first computer was a Gateway and I keep coming back. I love the full key board on this computer and the touch pad works like an iPhone which I really like. I wasn't sure that I would like the color, but the texturing adds dimension to the color and I'm liking it more than I thought I would. Its pretty fast and picture quality when Skyping is good.
Some people don't think the speakers are lound enough, but they are fine for what I want to do. I also love the sleeker design and the larger screen makes it easy to watch movies. I use an HP at work and since getting this computer -- I hate the work computer. I would recommend this to anyone!

Toshiba Dynadock U Universal USB Connect Docking Station Review

(More customer reviews)Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product. Instead of having 6-7 cords I plug and unplug into my laptop every single time I take it with me, there's just one. That's incredibly convenient. Also, my laptop has just 3 USB ports, and the dock has 6, so I can keep all my devices plugged in all the time. And when I want to eject the dock, I don't have to take care of them one by one... there's a special icon for "undocking" which allows you to eject the whole dock.
There is one compatibility issue however. So right now on my laptop, I'm dual booting Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC. I use 7 RC almost all the time, because it simply is much better than Vista. The one problem I've had with 7 RC though, is that I cannot install the video driver for this dock. (You see, to get the dock to work with your audio, video and network, you have to install a driver for each of them.) I've tried several times to install both the driver that came on the disc, and the latest one from the site. And every single time, my computer would crash, and I would not be able to restart 7 RC because some files were corrupt or something. I had to do a system restore every time. Eventually I gave up, and resorted to plugging my VGA cord in my laptop like I did before purchasing the dock. Not that big a deal though. I mean it's understandable... Windows 7 hasn't even been released yet, and nobody's really had a chance to create drivers for it.
So that's the one problem that I've had with this dock and Windows 7. Not sure if this is the case with Vista, because like I said, I don't really use it. Let me note, however, that at one point after I installed the driver, I did have a few minutes with the monitor displaying, and everything worked great. I had a monitor, speakers, a mouse, a keyboard, an external hard drive, a TV tuner, a printer, and a network cable all plugged in, and everything worked fine... no lag at all.
I'd say if you're looking for a dock, this is probably the best one out there. Has everything an average user could possibly need, and works fantastically. Well, almost...EDIT: I have to mention, my monitor's resolution is 1920x1200 and the dock had no problem displaying this the one time I got it to work. And like I said, even though I had like 7 different things going on over one USB cord, there was absolutely no lag. I feel like I have to mention this because I saw a few reviews which complained about it. So if it's slow, it's mostly likely your system, and not the dock.UPDATE 3/16/2010: I have now been using this product for almost a year, and I am very happy with it. As I mentioned before, it allows for incredible freedom for laptop users. You can have all the hard drives and TV tuners and peripherals as you would with a desktop, and then something as easy as a single click, you could pick up your laptop and go.
I would like to mention that since I wrote this review, I have moved on to the final release of Windows 7 (Pro), and a new set of drivers have been released, and everything works great (including the video)! There are two minor problems I still see with the dock. First, although the video now works, it can be a little laggy when running full screen videos. It works fine when running YouTube sized videos and doing most other things, so it's not so bad. The second problem I see is that when you're undocking it, it can be a bit tricky because you may still have some applications hanging on to some of your peripherals, and you'll get a message telling you so, but it's hard to tell which ones. For example even after I close Media Center, it still has some background process running, which prevents me from unplugging my TV tuner. Anyways, the workaround for that is to just turn off your computer and unplug the dock.UPDATE 5/13/2011: It's been two years now, and not much has changed since my last update. The dock is still working well, with no quality issues. I don't use the VGA port anymore because I often watch full-screen videos and as previously mentioned, this causes noticeable lag. For this reason I also uninstalled the dock's video driver, because when switching between monitors in Windows 7, it would sometimes switch to the dock's monitor, which wasn't actually there, and I would find my mouse wandering somewhere off screen. So my tip is to uninstall the dock's video driver if you are no using it. Another tip I can offer has to do with disconnecting the dock. As previously mentioned, if you have a program or process which is using a peripheral attached to the dock, you will not be able to disconnect the dock. The workaround is to end said process (using Windows Task Manager) before disconnecting the dock. But if you disconnect your dock often, this can be a pain. An easier solution is to create a 'batch file', which is a file that executes a set of commands (in this case, terminating a specific process) whenever opened. In my case, I have the batch file which ends the process 'ehrecvr' which is part of Windows Media Center, and which keeps my TV tuner from being disconnected. The batch file is located on the desktop, and whenever I need to disconnect the dock, I double-click it, and within two seconds, BOOM, process ended. There are a bunch of sites that explain how to create a batch file, and it's really really easy. Just search for "batch kill process", or something along those lines.

Patriot Signature 4 GB PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SODIMM Notebook Memory PSD34G13332S Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this product for 7 weeks. It works fine as a product (which means, for a memory, I do not notice its existence except for the added 4G totoal physical memory and almost zero swap usage under Linux).
I would rate it 4 or 5 stars as a product. But the 2-star rating above is based on my unpleasant experience with the Patriot Memory's rebate program.
Here is my experience.
I bought it on 30 September 2010 at price of $93.98 (including shipping), the last day of the (then) $20 rebate. I mailed out the rebate form *with the UPC sticker on the memory package* following their instructions on the program the next day after I received it from Amazon, expecting to receive the $20 gift card in 6 to 8 weeks.
However, I received a card from Patriot Memory on 13 November 2010, telling me that

Your claim is invalid for the following reason(s)
* The rebate requires the original 12 digit UPC from the product packaing.
Please submit the missing/corrected information , along with this postcard, to Patriot Memory at the address above by 11/14/2010.

I feel ripped off because I am positive that I have correctly followed their instructions on including the UPC sticker. I also feel insulted because I am *required to respond by the next day*. I can wait for one and a half month and you cannot wait for another day?
I searched on Google for "patriot memory rebate scam" and found a few other customers shared similar experiences [...]. Though I do not think my experience is universal (otherwise the company should be taken down by the customer long ago), mine is bad, and the only confirmed one for me.
To wrap it up, based on my experience, this is a fine product. But you should think twice before buying from them if the rebate is one of the main reasons to choose them over their competitors.

Having tried both the Speck and Incase offerings in my 15" MacBook Pro, I can provide the following insights:
Fit:
I believe the fit of the Incase Hardshell case is superior to that of the Speck, which may be due in part to how the rear of the bottom half of each case clips onto the MacBook. The Incase has one long clip that attaches to the underside of the MacBook at the hinge, while the Speck uses only two small clips on either side. The top half of each case fits about the same. Both cases feature 4 small rubber nubs which provide an imperceptible gap between the case and the aluminum surface of the MacBook, preventing any stray particles from grinding between the case and the MacBook causing scratches.
Function:
Neither case impedes the MagSafe power input or screen viewing angle. I noticed some other reviews mention that the added weight of the case caused the screen hinge to seem looser, but that was not my experience whatsoever. I could detect no difference in hinge function, and the screen stayed open using both cases even at the most acute screen angle. Note that I used a MacBook with the matte screen option for this comparison.
The underside of the Speck features one small cutout for heat dissipation, while the Incase has dithering across almost half of the bottom of the case. Not only does it look better aesthetically, but I'd imagine the Incase provides superior heat dissipation as well.
The standby light, IR port, and battery indicator are functional / visible on both cases.
Weight:
In my opinion neither case added inordinate bulk to the MacBook. I carry my MacBook around all day, and I wouldn't hesitate to use either one of these cases.
Quality:
The interior finish of the Incase has the same satin/matte finish as the exterior, while the interior of the Speck has a very cheap shiny plastic finish. Overall, the Incase feels like a higher quality product.
Verdict:
The Incase is superior to the Speck, but not drastically. Pick the case that comes in the color you like best. If both cases come in the color you want, get the Incase; it's worth the extra $15.
Note: This comparison was made between the most recent Speck Satin and Incase Hardshell cases available as of the date of this review, as well as the most recent 15" MacBook Pro w/ matte screen.

Being a young girl we wanted her to have some not only fashionable, but functional. Golla has a 10" bag but it doesn't fit "all" 10" laptops, so we bought this 13" instead. It easily held the laptop and left room for cords as well.
This bag is one of the few that is padded well, has very durable fabric on the outside, cute styling, and a handle for her to carry it with which most do not have and that is a problem as most kids are overloaded with things for school already and need an easy way to carry it.
This is a great bag, you won't be disappointed!

Street Atlas USA 2011 Review

With all the development over the last several years there are many neighborhoods that were not appearing in the 2008 version. The use of it is the same and happy overall with that...but a lot of the streets have NOT been updated so really it was a waste of money. I expected that since I bought this in the Fall of 2010 and it was the 2011 version that it would be fully updated with all the new streets but that is not the case.

Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7022 LED TruBrite 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of comparison between this laptop and a comparable Acer that I found on Amazon and a few other retailers. Over all the specs for both were the same. 17.3 screen, 500 gig hard drive, 4 gigs of ram. But the Toshiba had a better video card with more memory and the AMD processor was a true triple core where the Acer had a Intel i3 duel core. And even though the i3 clocked higher I was interested in the AMD chip since it actually has three dedicated chips that clock at 1.8 ghz and the i3 does not. When I received the laptop the first thing I noticed was the keyboard had a "smooshy" feel to it. My last laptop had a satisfying "click" when I pressed a key but after a few days of typing I am pretty happy with it. The keys are not as sloppy as I thought and typing is easy and accurate. I love the screen! My last laptop was a 15.6" screen and I wanted to trade up to a larger screen (I work from home as a graphic and video editing freelancer) The colors are crisp and the is nice and bright. Overall this laptop is very fast for a 17.3" that is under $800 I do plan on upgrading the memory to 8 gigs (which runs about $200 at this time) but for the everyday user the 4 gigs it comes with are more than enough. The 500 gig hard drive was also a must for me since all the programs I use for my work take up almost a 100 gigs just by themselves. So I am all installed and still have almost 400 gigs for storage. I have had this machine on for almost four hours now and it is not hot at all. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase.
Some smaller things -
Web cam - Not the best, it looks like the contrast it turned up way to high. Honestly its not a big deal to me since I'm not a big fan of web cams.
Speakers - Like most laptops the sound is a bit tinny. I have given up on a Windows laptop sounding as good as a Mac.
USB ports - Only three. my last machine had four and a firewire and this came in handy more than once.
Windows 7 - I don't get what all the hoopla is about. Windows 7 feels just like Vista. Maybe I am missing something, but from all the hype I expected it to burp rainbows and cure cancer and so far I am just not seeing it.
Update October 25th, 2010
I am still happy with this laptop. I have upgraded the memory to 8 gigs (Almost $300 at the time of purchases.) this has made things a little more zippy but now think I could have gone with 6 gigs (and half the price) and still been happy. Cooling on this laptop is the best I have ever had. I work on this all day and have never thought to myself "Better give this machine a rest to cool down".

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Slate Review

I've had this mouse for a couple of weeks and am very satisfied with it. There was no software installation. I simply plugged the wireless receiver into an available USB port, put a "AA" size battery in the mouse, and turned on the computer. The mouse started working just as Windows XP finished loading.
It may be a little small for really large hands, but it fits my hand (medium-size male) perfectly with my palm resting on a mouse pad for comfort. In fact, it feels better than most I've had in the past (desktop or laptop). And the mouse fits into a side packet of a laptop case very nicely. As others have pointed out, the USB receiver fits into the bottom of the mouse when traveling.
The buttons are shapped well, as are the rubber side grips. The two large buttons feel solid, but the center scroll button is a little noisy and doesn't feel as well made. But, that center button works as well as the other two.
Since I've only had it a couple of weeks, I don't know how long the "AA" battery will last yet. However, I'm using my laptop mainly as a desktop, used many hours each day, and the original battery is still going strong. To insert the battery, press the silver button directly below the "Microsoft" logo and the top pops off (the release button is designed to look decorative). At that point, one will immediately see the battery holder.
The wireless feature works flawlessly. In fact, if one had really good eyes, one could operate the computer from the other side of a room. Yes, I've actually tried that, with the mouse moving the cursor around the screen with no problems.
I just read one of the other reviews where a lag was mentioned. I've seen nothing of this. In fact, after reading that review, I sat here moving the mouse slowly, quickly, tiny movements, short movements, long movements, and so on, with no noticeable lag. The cursor moves exactly as the mouse moves.
All in all, I think anyone would be satisfied with this mouse.

UPDATE: I wrote the above in February 2005 and have continued to use the mouse since (now Aug 2006). It is still performing well and the battery mentioned in the review above lasted through about 2.5 months of routine everyday use. I have since purchased a second mouse for my desktop computer, which is also working fine after about four months. The following is in response to issues raised by other reviewers.
To Edwin A. Pell III (New York), the mouse fits identically in either a left or right hand. To reverse the buttons, open the "Mouse" control panel and select "other pointing devices" in the drop-down menu listing your laptop's touchpad.
Again, to anyone wanting to ADJUST MOUSE SETTINGS, use the "other pointing devices" selection in the "Mouse" control panel.
To A. Mazakov (Fairfax, VA), the mouse is not sealed shut. The screws are located under the four black adhesive feet on the bottom of the mouse. Pry the feet off with a knife and stick them back on when finished with your modification.
To Denis Dolgachev (Ann Arbor, MI), you do not have to disconnect the mouse each night. The mouse enters a battery saving mode when no movement is detected for some time, allowing batteries to last upwards of two to three months (depending on usage) with a continous connection. In other words, you really only need to disconnect the mouse when you want to move or store the computer.
Those mentioning lags, delays, or choppy movement should check the "Mouse" control panel settings or for things interfering with USB devices. When setup and operating properly, there is no latency behavior whatsoever with this mouse. Movements are fine and precise. The only normal delay is in the split second when the mouse recovers from the battery saving mode after periods of inactivity.

(More customer reviews)I bought this because I thought it would be funny and it was at a good price. Unfortunately the case has an overall cheap feel to it. In about a month the red string came off and now it's just a yellow Velcro sleeve.
The inside is a nice nylon and protects my laptop from scratches, so it serves it's purpose as a case. However I'm on the market for something new. The cheap yellow surface has become discolored from other things in my bag rubbing against it.
It's a good cheap solution for a case, but it is not something you will use very long.

(More customer reviews)I also have an HP DV4t, half a dozen older Toshiba, Sony and HP notebooks, and a whole gaggle of netbooks. So I'm kind of addicted to cool portable hardware.
Among the myriad laptops & netbooks I've owned and used, this one is not the best, but certainly above-average.
Stylish, Core i3 is quick, memory & HDD are roomy. The screen is bright, color saturation is good but mildly washed out relative to the better panels out there. The 8" 1600x900 panel on Sony Vaio P-series is the worst color I've ever seen; this one is above average, just not the best. Beware that this unit (Amazon's, specifically) does not come with a backlit keyboard, which is part of the standard U505-S2005 build spec on Toshiba's website. I bought & installed the backlit keyboard separately, but it cost another $60. So actually this isn't a great deal, it's a cut-rate edition for a cut-rate price. If the backlit keyboard, bluetooth and slot-loading DVD don't really matter to you, then save yourself maybe $150 and snag one of these. Overall it's a very stylish case wrapped around some respectable hardware. However, if you don't care about the relatively compact 13" LCD or the fashionable presentation of the dark brown case, you might be just as well served with a standard 15.4" unit from HP or Acer, with similar hardware, for a couple hundred bucks less. That's true of any laptop that charges a premium for its design.
If you do care about the style and compactness, U505 is a great option.
