Duracell Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries Review

Duracell Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries
Average Reviews:

[Updated Dec 24, 2008]
I was only half-right when I boldly proclaimed that "Duracell Pre Charged AA are rebranded Sanyo eneloop cells" in my original review. It turns out that the first batch of Duracell AA cells I bought from Amazon are made in Japan, and those are identical to eneloop (both mechanically and electrically). But lately I bought some more Duracell AA from a warehouse club. Those are made in China, and they are identical to the Rayovac Hybrid.
[Original review follows]
Judging from similarity of technical specifications and physical shapes of (+) and (-) terminals, I am convinced that the Duracell Pre Charged AA is actually SANYO eneloop AA underneath a different wrapper. Therefore all the good things you heard about eneloop apply to Duracell 'Pre Charged', too.
My own testing has shown that the capacity of eneloop AA cell is slightly above the claimed 2000mAh, and it is able to retain at least 85% of its charge after 5 months in storage. The Rayovac Hybrid AA starts with slightly higher capacity at 2100mAh, but it 'only' retains 80% capacity after 5 months. For all practical applications, both are equally good. Just pick whichever brand (Sanyo, Rayovac, or Duracell) is on-sale, and you can't go wrong.
One small problem with the Duracell 'Pre Charged' cell is that: it looked too similar to the well-known 'Copper Top' alkaline cell. So there is a good chance that people may mistaken it for a disposable cell. Personally, I prefer the distinctive-looking white case of the eneloop cell.

Earthmate GPS BT-20 2010 Review

Earthmate GPS BT-20 2010

I purchased the product specifically for the bundled Palm OS support. Pairing the BT-40 to a Palm Centro is spotty at best. Add to that the lost pairing during an incoming call, and the product is virtually worthless for mobile Palm use.
I haven't spent much time with the PC-based software. I'm sure (or I hope) it's much better.

Acer AS7741G-6426 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Acer AS7741G-6426 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as I took it out of the box, I was amazed!
***PLEASE READ IF YOU'RE TRYING TO DECIDE BETWEEN THE 6426 MODEL & THE 7017 MODEL***
The screen is very bright & very vivid, I find it just beautiful. I've read reviews on other sites complaining about the large size of it, please remember this is a 17.3" laptop. It is a nice size laptop & will of course be a bit heavier than an 11". If you aren't sure how big it is, please grab a tape measure & measure 17.3" diagonally. Rating the laptop lower because you didn't want a large laptop is just plain idiotic.
I plugged it in & turned it on. I was expecting to have to fight with it to set up the network connection (sometimes connections are a hassle), but this laptop made it so easy. I was able to set up my network within the first two minutes of having turned it on. It booted up, I typed in my network key, & I was connected, easy as that.
I'm a long time Windows XP user, so I had to get used to the Windows 7 set up. But, I really like it! I find it very easy to figure out.
The keys on the keyboard are nice. They don't feel sticky, or too large. You do have to give it time if you are moving over from a regular keyboard though, due to a little more space.
Some people also complain about not having a light on the keyboard itself to signify the CAP/NUM locks, I don't have issues with this due to the fact, I look at my screen as I type. If you accidentally hit the CAP/NUM lock it will show you on the screen. It will have a lock icon with either an uppercase A for CAPS lock or a number 1 for NUM lock, the lock will be closed if on, or open if off. It's really simple if you know your "home keys" & are able to type & read at the same time.
One reason I bought this laptop was because of the dedicated graphics card. This has not disappointed me whatsoever. My boyfriend bought me the Sims 3, the week it came out, but because of his desktop computer being older than a dinosaur, I was unable to play it. THIS LAPTOP PLAYS IT BEAUTIFULLY! And on mostly high settings as well.
Picture quality is good when watching things on Netflix or Hulu, as well as Youtube. I've had no trouble multitasking either, I'll have music playing, Firefox open & GIMP 2.0 open for photo editing & I have yet to see it lag.
One thing, the battery life isn't going to be as well off as the smaller laptops. That's just something that's obvious, bigger screen = more power needed to run. I get about 2.5 hours of multitasking before I have to plug it in. It does seem to charge rather quickly though, so that's a plus. I also like how you can keep it plugged in & not have to worry about over charging the battery because it stops charging once it gets to 100% regardless of being plugged in or not.
I would rate it a 4.5 if it was an option, due to the volume. It's worth more than 4 stars, but the laptop volume isn't as high as I would like. But, you have to remember it's a laptop & if you wanted a stereo system attached to it, you should go with a desktop. It's still more than loud enough for games, but Youtube it's a little low. I have not tried headphones yet, but I'm sure that when something is actually attached to your ear the sound will be louder. lol.
When I was looking to buy this laptop, I had also looked at the 7017 Model which is more expensive. Looking at the specs, I can't really see why that one has so many more reviews. It's the same laptop except THIS one the 6426, has a higher speed processor (2.66GHz vs. 2.53GHz) & a larger hard drive (640GB vs. 500GB). So why buy the 7017 Model for $829.99 when you can buy the better 6426 Model for $677.99? Save the $152 bucks!
I bought mine for $677.99 & paid for two day shipping. The total was around $701 & sure enough it was here two days later. I absolutely love this laptop & I'm 100% happy with my decision to go with the Acer AS7741G-6426. :)

ASUS PCE-N13 - Wireless PCI-Express Adapter - 802.11b/g/n - 2 External Antenna Review

ASUS PCE-N13 - Wireless PCI-Express Adapter - 802.11b/g/n - 2 External Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There isn't much to say about a wireless adapter except that it works or it doesn't. This one works well. It is fast and the board and antennae seem to be well constructed. I installed it on a system running 64-bit Windows. The Windows driver would not work with it at all and, in the beginning, neither would the ASUS driver. Device manager found the card but the network could not find it. After a bit of googling, I shut down my Kaspersky firewall and reinstalled the ASUS driver. It started and ran perfectly. I reactivated the firewall and it continued to work properly. I'm not a computer guru so I cannot explain why this would be. However, if you have trouble getting the card to work, try disabling your firewall software.

elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter for Mac Review

elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter for Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's say you just bought a new Mac. And you realize it has a Firewire 800 slot. And you have a few Firewire 400 hardrive enclosures you'd rather not get rid of.
Instead of going out and buying a new set of Firewire400 to Firewire800 cables to use with your mac and existing Firewire hard drives, this is the economical solution to your problems. Just buy this and you can continue to use your old FW400 cables and save yourself some money.
The adapter has a FW400 slot at one end where you plug in your existing FW400 cable and a FW800 plug at the other end which you plug into your Mac's FW800 slot. The adapter itself is chunky, and is a tight fit in the slot right next to my mini DP to DVI adapter but it does fit and it works.
There have been no random disconnects or data dropouts during my usage of the adapter to connect my external hard drives and transfer data to and from my mac. I have two of these and both work perfectly on my computer.
Considering the fact that other companies sell a single Firewire 800 to 400 adapter for prices ranging between 10 to 12 dollars, this is definitely a good value buy at $6.99
However, if you're looking for a flexible product that fits more easily next to your Mini DP to Mini DVI adapter, the moshi FireWire 800 to 400 adapter may be an option you should consider.
Hope this helps!

Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (Blue) Review

Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted a mouse for my Macbook that did not require me to plug in a dongle. Therefore, a bluetooth mouse was my obvious choice. I heard about this mouse some months before it was available for purchase. It has bluetooth and laser. I am glad I waited for this mouse - it is great. It does what a mouse should without having to fuss with it or deal with all kinds of uneeded "features". Logitech once again came up with a winner.
It was recognized easily by my Macbook and worked perfectly without having to tweak anything. Contrary to what some reviewers say about laser mice, this mouse is not too sensitive. Scrolling is smooth and accurate. There is a slight delay when the computer starts for bluetooth to recognize the mouse, but this is negligible.
There is an on-off switch to conserve the battery -- very nice! Also, it is white to match my Macbook. I have had this mouse about a week and have not discovered any negatives. I love it.

Acer AS5742-6475 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black) Review

Acer AS5742-6475 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my review after two weeks of use. I am a database developer; I work with Sql server 2005 client tools, virtual box, MS office, VPNs and other development recourses. In general terms, this computer has enough speed and processing capabilities to perform a good job.
I could summarize the pros and cons of this machine in this way:
Pros:
*Intel I3 is fast enough to perform programming work. Very good in multitasking.
*4G ram gives you a very good program execution with fast access to resources.
*500GB of storage is great for pictures and work documents.
*EXCELENT display (HD with Led).
*Good image quality for the built-in web cam.
*Quiet enough (fan and hard drive).
*Over 4 hours battery (six cells), NICE!.
Cons:
*The worst thing of this machine is its SOUND. Only one mono speaker is SAD.
*The keyboard seems to be weak. I am afraid that in the short term it could fail.
*The mouse smart-pad should be located one inch more to the right side to avoid accidental touches.
*You must push hard to plug in something in the USB ports.Funny note: I bought this laptop in Amazon and some software from Ebay was found installed in it from factory!!.
Note for international buyers. This laptop will be sent to your country within a huge box!, then if your local carrier charges you for volume weight, you could be overcharged.

Acer AS1430Z-4677 11.6-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black) Review

Acer AS1430Z-4677 11.6-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a quick few comments. I bought a 1430Z (from another vendor, where it was cheaper at the time) mainly because:
o It has more screen pixels than 10.1" netbooks do
o CPU benchmarks I found on the web were much better than for typical Atom processors
o It's considerably lighter and smaller than 13.3" notebooks
o It comes with more memory than typical netbooks do
My intention (as with all my computers) was to run Ubuntu Linux, dual booting occasionally into Windows.
My impressions so far:
Pros:
o Nice compact form factor. It's even a tad lighter than the spec; mine weighs just under 3 lbs
o Ubuntu 10.10 works. But I had to blacklist 2 modules (intel_ips and acer-wmi).
o External VGA gives you a full extended desktop (at least in Ubuntu, haven't experimented in Windows): I get 1366x768 on the notebook and 1680x1050 on a 22" external monitor at the same time. This has not worked well or at all on other notebooks I've had in the past.
o Applications respond snappily -- this is subjective of course. Video is good. I also run my own CPU-intensive simulation benchmark on all my computers to compare them. The 1430Z (Intel U5600 CPU) is about 26% slower than a desktop with an AMD 5000+ CPU, 18% faster than a notebook with an Intel SU7300 CPU, and 11% faster than a notebook with an Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz CPU.
Cons:
o Battery life is OK but unexceptional -- this is only subjective since I haven't measured it. But battery life has never been a high priority for me. For all my laptops it has dropped precipitously after a year or so, no matter how impressive it may have been when new.
o The Keyboard lacks the feel of a great keyboard, like the classic Thinkpads of yore, or a decent desktop keyboard. And the Home/End/PgUp/PgDown/Up/Down/Left/Right are squashed together in the lower right; I don't know if I'll ever learn to find them without looking.
Overall then, this fits the bill for me: portability, performance, and Linux.

I have been a fan of WD for many years. Sure most companies go through periods when their products might not live up to expectations but WD has really stepped up their game.
I purchased this drive to replace a Momentus XT in my Macbook 15" Unibody 2010. I simply gave up with the bizarre behavior and constant firmware upgrades of the Momentus and went with this Scorpio Black released just days ago.
Much to my suprise, its pretty much as fast as the Momentus XT (when it was working correctly) except for boot. Since I am on a Mac, I really dont reboot much so its not an issue.
The 750GB capacity is stunning!! I have a 500GB Mac partition and a 250GB Windows Partition and I am pretty much set until SSDs drop in price.
This drive carries a 5 year warranty and WD has always supposed their warranty program well.
I am not noticing very much vibration in my Macbook but to be honest, I yanked the slow 5400rpm drive and replaced it with the Momentus as soon as I unboxed so I can not compare against the original drive.
Battery life has decreased slightly (30 mins) but given the speed of the drive and the performance increase, that is to be expected.
Remember if you are replacing in a Mac, do yourself a favor and invest in a quality set of percision screwdrivers as the screws are easily stripped and can often times be tight enough to strip inferior tools.

Power Supply Cord for DELL XPS M1330/M1530/M1210 Laptop Review

Power Supply Cord for DELL XPS M1330/M1530/M1210 Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the charger, expecting the exact same power cord i originally had, and it wasn't. I plugged it into my laptop, and about two minutes later I heard a loud "pop" from the power supply and my laptop shut off. I was horrified thinking that the power cord had burned out my laptop. Well, I notified the supplier, it took them longer than I had hoped, to get back to me. On the good side, they replaced it with a new power supply, which does work. However, I had to send a photo of my original power supply, so they could see the specs on it and send me the right one. Which gives me the impression that they don't know what they're doing. Although my power cord works, I think next time, I will just spend the extra money and buy from Dell, and with it I will have peace of mind.

Acer AS5736Z-4427 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this for my girlfriend and received it yesterday so I haven't been able to fully put it through the paces.
That being said, I am completely satisfied so far. It came with an unhealthy amount of bloatware and the HDD was partitioned into 3 sections for 'recovery' so I did a fresh install of Win7 and got rid of the BS partitions. I noticed it was much snappier after the fresh install. Acer didn't have the wireless driver on the site with the rest of the drivers but a google search lead me in the right direction.
The keyboard is great! A big selling point was the built-in keypad. The only problem with this is when you are in normal typing position (ie. not using keypad), your hands will be on the far left of the computer so if you're using it on your lap, it's a little awkward because your hands are shifted to the left side of your body. It feels a bit unnatural. The exterior is aesthetically pleasing. Mouse click buttons were a little stiff toward the middle but are fine on the far left or right - no big deal.
I was able to stream a 1080p video to my 42" TV using the HDMI port and the computer didn't struggle at all. We watched ZombieLand + another hour of just messing around on it all on battery.
Aside from the bloatware and the offset keyboard, I really have no complaints thus far. For the price, this is an amazing deal!!

I was excited to get this laptop because the price was fantastic for the configuration.
I have had it for two weeks and so far I really like it. However, just one thing about it is kind of annoying: 1. The volume of the speakers is very very low. I'd go as far as saying it is not usable. Volume is fine with headphones or connected to my wireless speakers.
But its got lots of pros: Set up was a breeze, nice screen, super light, fast, doesn't get hot at all.
I have not been with it unplugged yet so can't speak for the battery life.
I do not believe there is a perfect laptop for $500, so considering the configuration, I think I chose well.

This battery lasts slightly longer than the one that came with our laptop, but still not as long as it should. Also Our computer says that the condition of the battery is poor, and that was right after we put it in. It's not that great, but if you are just looking for something cheaper to get you buy for now, it will work for you.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop Review

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an able computer, but the so called value additions that make this model $300 more expensive than the standard Macbook Pro 13 are hardly worth it. If you're thinking about buying this version of the 13 inch Macbook Pro, please consider taking a look at the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop.
The only difference between this $1499 MBP 13 and the $1199 MBP 13 are processor speed and hard drive space - this MBP 13 has a 2.66ghz processor and 320 gb hard drive while the standard MBP 13 has a 2.4 ghz processor and 250 gb hard drive.
So you're paying $300 more (20% of the cost of the $1499 MBP 13 or 25% of the cost of the standard $1199 MBP 13) and getting only 70 gb more hard drive space and a processor faster by 266 mhz (Approximately 10%). Whether that's worth a $300 price difference over the standard MPB 13 is questionable.
Everything else is IDENTICAL in both MPB 13's - Superdrive, backlit keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, screen (1280 x 800 resolution Glossy LED backlit screen), iSight camera, Nvidia Geforce 320m integrated graphics, speakers, amount of ram (4gb - good for multitasking),number of ports(1 Firewire 800 port,2 USB 2.0 ports), SD Card slot, wireless capabilities (802.11n specification; 802.11a/b/g compatible, Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet -10/100/1000). THE SAME EVERYTHING.
The software included is also the same - OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iLife 09 suite of content creation tools. A 1 year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is also standard on both models
Let's consider a situation where you choose to buy the standard MBP 13 instead of this model. You'd save $300.
You could then put it towards purchasing a 500 gb hard drive (for approximately $80 on Amazon) and install it yourself. That's a bigger hard drive than the one included in this $1499 model. The installation instructions are included in the MBP 13 manual and it doesn't void the warranty. You'll need a Philips #00 screwdriver. Installation videos are also available online.
You'd also have $220 left with which,(if you decide to) you could buy Applecare or Squaretrade and protect your machine for 2 more years after the first year limited warranty runs out.
If you're interested in using your money optimally, do consider the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop It's 99% identical in terms of hardware and capability in comparison to this $1499 MBP 13 and is in all aspects, a much better value for money buy.
Hope this helps!

Not sure why this one is so cheap - it's a steal compared to other models, or to other vendors for this same model. It's a corsair, how bad could it be? I have had it for 2 only weeks, but both Win7 and Ubuntu run great, couldn't be happier!

Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 Review

Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this desk for about a month now. It has some serious benefits and some bothersome disadvantages
The good:
1. Fits perfectly in my chair on my lap and has room for a mouse (sort of, see below).
2. The fan is quiet
3. The fan works very well on my laptop which has had overheating problems even on just plain flat surfaces.
4. It is very, very sturdy
5. It was pure plug and play, even for my old laptop.
The not so good
1. It is light by itself, but with the laptop and the weight distributed over a relatively small area, it feels a bit on the heavy side.
2. The shape is such that it pulls air in from both behind and beneath. That means that it needs to create space beneath the tray. The padding at the back of this creates a very narrow padded edge that rests on my legs. The combination of the fabric texture and the weight makes it uncomfortable after a while.
3. The angle on your lap puts the tray higher at the rear than the front. Necessary for air flow, but using an external mouse is basically impossible because a mouse slides off no matter what posture I assume. Yes, I'm a mouser.
4. Using a mouse pad is only a partial fix for the above, and it blocks a speaker. I trimmed an old one to fit, but the mouse still slips off now and then and I have to fish it out of my chair.
5. Sound quality is just okay - a bit on the muddy side with insufficient treble for listening, but music sounds decent and if I'm working, critical listening is not a priority.
I had an old "as seen on TV" lap desk that had a beanbag bottom. It was very comfortable, had room for the mouse, and it would lay flat. Its durability was awful, which is why I chose this item.
I'm keeping the Logitech and actually do recommend it. I'll look for a higher-friction mouse pad and hope the rear padding doesn't tattoo my legs.
